MOTH TRAPS

​

Occasionally on calm, mild nights, a trap with a light is set up in the woods to record which moth species are flying. Each one is carefully identified and logged helping build a picture of local biodiversity.

Butterflies may steal the spotlight, but moths are the real heavyweights, around 2,500 species have been recorded in the UK, compared to just 60 for butterfly. Many are beautifully patterned, proving that the night shift can be just as dazzling as the day.
