SCALLOPS

No, not the tasty seafood nuggets, these are the semi-circular clearings cut into the sides of the paths. Called “lay-bys” by the locals, they are laboriously cleared by volunteers (and you thought cutting back your garden was hard work).

Why do it? Letting in a bit of sunshine helps flowers bloom, which attracts bees, butterflies, and all sorts of buzzing things. Those insects bring in birds, and soon you’ve got a whole mini food festival going on.

It’s all part of a ten-year plan to keep different parts of the woodland at different ages, from newly cleared to fully grown, so there’s always somewhere for something to live. Think of it as giving the woods a regular haircut… only with a lot more brambles and mud.
