Hedge-laying is enjoying a renaissance - much to the delight of Britain's wildlife. By partially cutting and then laying the branches down, growth is invigorated at the point they are cut, which fills out the hedge, restoring its youth and freshness. This bushy growth is hugely helpful to a full range of wildlife.

At Greener Padbury, we've long been keen on the idea of hedge-laying as a means of boosting biodiversity, but the discovery of black hairstreak butterflies in the Millennium Woods has moved it up our list of priorities; when Butterfly Conservation's hairstreak expert visited the woods this summer, we asked what could we do to protect and promote this endangered species - lay it a hedge was the answer.

Not only does this type of management support wildlife, but mature, maintained hedgerows are a carbon sink'; incredibly, they capture more carbon in every hectare than forests! They also support thousands of species, provide shade for livestock, reduce soil erosion, and slow down, absorb and store vast amounts of water which can help reduce flooding.
